What is Tepezcohuite?

The tepezcohuite is a plant also known as Mimosa Tenuiflora which is native to the south-eastern regions of Mexico and part of the country’s national heritage.

The plant has a lot of tiny leafs on each branch. It shouldn’t be confused for the Acacia, whose flowers are used on International Women’s Day.

The word tepezcohuite is nahuatl, a language primarily spoken in central Mexico. The meaing of the first part of the word (“tepez”)is unknown. The second part, “cuahuitl“, means tree.

The plant grows in areas that tare between 800 and 1000 meters above sea level.

The history of Tepezcohuite

In the X century, the powdered tree bark was used by Mayan healers to heal skin injuries.

The miraculous effects of this plant were then rediscovered after two of the biggest disasters to ever happen in Mexico (the explosion of an LPG distribution centre in 1984 and the devastating earthquake the following year), when it was used to heal most of the victims.

How do I use it?

This plant has been used in medicine for centuries, and it has also been used in phytoterapy. The bark is the most used part fo this plant.

Its use differs from country to country: in Messico, people usally make a decoction using ground Tepezcohuite bark. The resulting decoction has both internal and external uses. It can be drunk, to help with any internal wounds (on gums, in the mouth,…) or used to make a compress and placed on any painful areas.
